Phobias

Hypnotherapy for phobias in Bristol

Phobias can significantly impact your life, affecting everything from your ability to enjoy daily activities to your long-term personal and professional goals. Whether you have a common fear, such as of spiders or heights, or something more unusual, like a fear of cotton wool, hypnotherapy can help you break free from the control these fears have over you.

You may be struggling with a specific phobia, like the fear of flying, public speaking, or visiting the dentist. Or perhaps your phobia triggers severe anxiety around more everyday situations. Regardless of what you fear, hypnotherapy can assist you in altering your perceptions, thoughts, and emotional reactions to the feared object or situation. By doing this, we can help you regain control, reduce the intensity of your fear, and experience a greater sense of calm and relaxation when faced with triggers, enabling you to engage more fully with life.

I have extensive experience working with clients who have flying phobias and health-related phobias, including a fear of needles and those who experience fainting when confronted with their fear. If you’re struggling with any of these challenges, I understand how deeply they can affect your life, and I’m here to help you regain control and move forward with confidence.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Address Phobias

Phobias often feel overwhelming and limiting, but hypnotherapy offers a powerful tool to retrain your brain and change how you respond to your fears. During our sessions, we will focus on what works best for you. Everyone experiences fear differently, so we’ll tailor each session to your needs. These are just some of the ways we might work together:

🔸 Systematic Desensitisation
Using gradual exposure techniques, we will slowly introduce you to situations involving your feared stimulus in a controlled, safe way. By progressively imagining these situations while remaining calm, we can retrain your brain’s response, reducing anxiety and making real-life encounters with your fear more manageable.

🔸 Creating a Felt Sense of Safety
Hypnotherapy, combined with relaxation techniques, will help shift your nervous system out of the fight-or-flight response and create a sense of safety. Over time, this can help your brain recognize that there’s no real threat, allowing you to stay calm when facing your phobic trigger.

🔸 Working with Thoughts & Emotions
Rather than trying to directly change your thoughts, we will use CFT- and ACT-based techniques to help you interact with your fear-related thoughts in a healthier way. You’ll learn to observe and accept these thoughts, without letting them control your actions or emotions. By cultivating self-compassion and acceptance, you can approach your fear with more flexibility and less self-criticism.

🔸 Reducing Avoidance & Safety Behaviors
Avoidance behaviors, though temporarily relieving, can reinforce your fear and make it more challenging to face your phobia in the future. We will gently work to reduce these behaviors, helping you confront your fear in a manageable way, allowing you to build real confidence and resilience.

🔸 Developing Psychological Flexibility
Using ACT-based techniques, we’ll help you stay connected to your values and goals, even when anxiety arises. This means learning to act in line with what truly matters to you, even in the presence of fear, which will help you move toward a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

One of the most powerful techniques I teach all my clients is self-hypnosis. This skill allows you to reinforce the progress we make together in your sessions, helping you manage your phobia. By learning self-hypnosis, you’ll build lasting resilience, enabling you to stay calm and centered even in situations that once triggered your fear.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

The number of sessions required depends on the nature and severity of your phobia. For specific phobias, such as fear of spiders, needles, or flying, relief can often be achieved in 4 sessions in addition to the initial consultation. However, for more complex phobias, such as agoraphobia or social phobia, a longer course of therapy may be needed.

After these initial sessions, we’ll review your progress. You may choose to continue with additional sessions, take a break to practice the techniques on your own, or book occasional top-up sessions when needed for ongoing support.
